Michael Edward Edgerton’s Tempo Mental Rap (2005) is a solo guitar work structured as six variations on a rap by Frank Zappa, originally transcribed by guitarist Steve Vai. Awarded the Kompositionspreis der Landeshauptstadt Stuttgart in 2007, the piece received its first complete performance only in 2024, at the Malmö Academy of Music — nearly two decades after its completion.
